Why produce this play? In theater we have the opportunity to entertain, envoke laughter, inspire thought, connect as humans, open minds and educate ... few plays allow us to do all these things in the course of two hours ... The Land Southward does. It is also a very timely piece. Though on the surface it seems to focus on past events, it does so with a connection to the present day ... at a time when history is coming dangerously close to repeating itself. The cast size is small and contains roles of equal size - roles actors are hungry to play. The production and space requirements are simple. It's an intimate piece, but one that reads well in theaters both large and very small. The Land Southward is an important play, but it doesn't preach its message from a soap box - it challenges the audience member to think for himself. The dialogue is captivating. The pace moves quickly. It's digestable. It's entertaining. It envokes both laughter and tears, and has prompted standing ovations ... even in staged readings ... even in Utah. "It's just GOOD THEATER" "Darcy Hogans The Land
Southward is a near-perfect work ... keen insight, intellectual depth, sly humor and
Undeniable Truth ... all of it works beautifully ... a play that sticks to you long after
your car has pulled out of the theater parking lot ... a play that could beshould
bea classic ..." " ... an insightful interpretation
of the complex reasons why a people subserviently suffered a heinous fate to redeem
themselves to their country ... the action moves briskly through the series of vignettes
with plenty of comic relief, such as from puppet Adam the Atom, which does not
take away from the serious and urgent probing of the play." "A play has not effected me like
[this] in a long time ... the play was written in a way that made the show go along at a
magnificent pace - I was never bored" "I had the honor and privilege of
seeing the World Premiere Production of The Land Southward ... It keeps you
locked into it from the beginning to the end. All the emotions apply...happiness, sadness,
intrigue, of course hilarity..." "I am still thinking about this
play and it has been a week since I saw the production. I haven't seen a show that moved
me so profoundly in a very long time." "We found it to be funny, sad,
ironic, horrifying, and thought-provoking. Thank you for speaking out on this important
topic." "I saw the reading of this amazing
play in Utah last fall and am thrilled that I will be able to see the full production in
California this spring. Donald Rumsfeld has just requested money to develop new nuclear
weapons; every member of Congress should be required to see this play before they vote on
his request."
